Create financial models

Create financial models for planning, fundraising, or budgeting

Written by Tara Lee

Create a model

Use a Model for your company’s long range financial planning, fundraise, or department-level budgeting. A Model aggregates expenses / income and displays the data as tables and charts alongside key program and project milestones.

  • Use the Create button from the top menu bar to create a new Model

  • Add Sources via the “Sources” tab on the left sidebar

  • Use the … menu in the top-right to update the permissions of the Model as necessary

Add model sources

A Model aggregates its financial data and timelines from Sources. A source can be a budget, program, or project.

For example, for an upcoming fundraise, you might add the following sources to a model to understand how much money you need to raise to extend your runway until IND.

Source

Description

Investments (Budget)

Prior funding rounds, grants, or other sources of cash

Personnel (Budget)

Salaries for FTEs and consultants

G&A (Budget)

Expenses related to facilities, IT, or other misc. items

ORCH-001 (Program)

Program-related expenses

ORCH-002 (Program)

Program-related expenses

Visualize model data

The Table tab provides a grid display of the Model data. This enables you to drill down into categories of expenses to easily view where certain costs or payments are coming from.

  • Use the toolbar at the top to adjust settings, such as changing the time interval, grouping, or filters

  • Drill down into each category by expanding the rows

The Charts tab displays important model metrics and charts, including information about cash out date and monthly burn. Program timelines are also shown alongside financial data to highlight key program milestones in relation to key funding events.

  • Use the … menu at the top right of a chart to adjust its settings

  • Click “Add chart” to add a chart

Create model scenarios

Use a Model scenario to plan different combinations of source scenarios.

This makes it easy to understand, for example, how much the “Phase I delay” scenario for Program 004 might impact your runway, and whether toggling on the “Funding extension round” scenario for the Funding budget might help.

Compare the scenario to the base case of using all of the Model’s source’s base cases.

  • Click Add scenario at the top

  • On the Sources tab, click on the dropdown next to the source name to pick a scenario for the source

  • The other tabs will show the Model’s scenario data. The Scenario tab includes comparisons between the scenario and the base case.
